The dance portion of your tryout is for you to demonstrate your coordination, dance ability and performance personality. We expect to see a high level of perfection and performance of the correct choreography. Dances should be mistake free, sharp and individualized with your own 'flava' within the limits of the choreography. Minor details in placement, hand positions and slight choreography will be corrected at the actual tryout.

The cheer portion of the tryout is for you to demonstrate your general cheerleading skills in motions, energy, voice and showmanship. We expect to see a mastery of these types of skills to be considered for a collegiate level team. Your cheer should be mistake free, high energy, great vocal clarity and strength along with a bright 'cheer personality' that fills space and engages the viewer.
Your required minimum backhandspring is incorporated into the cheer and there is an option skill area for you to include any additional jumps or gymnastics skills. You may increase the difficult of your bhs skills by adding a harder gymnastics skill in it's place such as a standing tuck etc. You may also repeat a skill or show other jump or tumbling skills in the optional skill area. This area is optional and will not hurt you, but will help you if you do something there!
You cheer is mainly focused on your general cheer ability and cheer presence and the skill factors add or detract from that ability. You will be more specifically evaluated for you gymnastics and jumping capabilities in those areas/sections of the tryouts.
Jumps
You will be expected to show a toe touch and a pike jump. While those are the minimum of what is expected, you are encouraged to demonstrate more advanced jumping ability by incorporating jump combinations, jump tumbling or both. If you chose to increase the difficulty of your requirements, you will still need to perform a pike and a toe touch but not in the same sequence.
It is best to demontrate your jumps in a way that emphasizes your ability and does not highlight your weakness. Don't do a toe back tuck if you are going to do a substandard toe touch in order to land the back tuck. Execution at a high level of perfection, presentation and maximum difficulty is the standard.
Tumbling
You will have a standing tumbling requirement and a running tumbling requirement. The minimums are a standing backhandspring and a round-off backhandspring backtuck. In addition, you will have a standing optional and a running pass optional. These are optional and will not be held against you, but you are strongly encouraged to show as much of your tumbling ability as possible at the requirement or better. If you do not have the running tumbling requirement, you should demonstrate as much tumbling as you are capable of doing. Your standing requirement maybe a harder skill than a backhandspring if it includes a backhandspring. Your running tumbling requirement maybe be harder than a backhandspring backtuck if it includes a round-off backhandspring to an arial skill. These situations essentially give you the chance to have two optionals for running and standing tumbling.
YOU WILL NOT MAKE THE TEAM WITHOUT A STANDING AND RUNNING ROUND OFF BACKHANDSPRING.
Persons trying out as a Tumbler may omit the stunting section of the tryout
if they can include two twisting skills or one twist and one other arial skill
in the same pass. They will also be required to show one twisting skill in a
standing tumbling pass.
Stunts
Regardless of experience, everyone will stunt for their tryout. First you will
choose a position to tryout as. Flyer, Base, Back Base. I can help you decide
if you don't know. Generaly we are looking for flexible experienced flyers with
small or petite stature. We like our side bases to be stronger built girls of
short to medium height. Our back bases historically are taller or long armed
strong girls. These are all generalizations of the ideal types for each position.
They are not set in stone.
You are encouraged to show the hardest clean and solid skills you can. Shaky
skills, bad body positions or dropped stunts will be a negative rather than
a positive. Once again, the idea is to execute at a high level of perfection,
presentation and maximum difficulty. In that order!
Do not be intimidated by stunting if you have little to no experience. All skills can be learned and mastered at the tryout! Many of our current members had little to no experience when they tried out as well.
Good Luck and we look forward to seeing you next week at Open practice or tryouts!
